VMware Workstation 10 error: Not enough physical memory is available to power this virtual machine

Issue: You attempt to start a virtual machine running on Workstation 8, 9 or 10 and you get a message that you have no memory available to run the vm.

The exact message is:

Not enough physical memory is available to power this virtual machine with its configured settings.

Solution: Limit the amount of memory the virtual machine (VM) can get access to from the host. I understand this limits it to 75% of the memory of the host.

  1. Shut down all running virtual machines
  2. Close VMware Workstation
  3. Open config.ini located at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation
  4. Insert this line:     vmmon.disableHostParameters = TRUE
  5. Save and close the file.
  6. Restart VMware Workstation. You may also have to reboot Windows.

vmware memory

Affected systems: Officially Win 7 SP1. I encountered this with XP as well.
