Windows 7 share no longer allows users to connect.

You may have encountered a problem where Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 shares suddenly no longer works. I ran into this on a Windows XP virtual machine (VM) when trying to connect to a Windows 7. One day it worked and the next it errored out.

In this case it was easy to rationalize that the XP was exactly the same and thus the change was on the Windows 7. After some digging and testing, it became obvious this was not something changed by myself or anyone else.

Microsoft’s KB4480960 and KB4480970 had been installed during the update window. When installed, these two updates cause connection errors for all local users who are part of the local “Administrators” group. They simply cannot connect to remote shares on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

Fix: Good news everone! Microsoft’s KB4487345 update fixes the problem. Simply update the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

I performed soem tests, applied the update and rebooted. The dhare worked as expected after the application of the update.
