Microsoft Windows 7 share causes issues. Event Id 2017 error

Event Id 2017

The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations.

Make a backup before playing with the registry please!

If you are sharing using a Windows 7 machine and are either freezing or crashing a lot try this:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache (make the key a 1)

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size (Make the key a 3)

WordPress site shows someone else`s content. Your wordpress site has been hacked and taken over.

If your wordpress site is suddenly displaying garbage (a.k.a. someone elses pages) then you’ve been hacked. If you log in as administrator you’ll notice that your content should all be there and intact.

What they have done is modified your htaccess file.

To quickly restore your site to its’ former glory, I recommend simply:

  • add the Bulletproof plugin in WordPress.
  • Generate a sucure htaccess file (using the plugin)
  • Select each option one by one and activate (enable) them all.

Your site should be back up and running normally.

Windows 7 or Windows 8 takes a long time to shutdown with VMWare workstation 10

As listeners to the podcast know I like VMWare products a lot. Although I use vSphere ESXi servers mainly, I routinely use their Workstation product to create VMs (virtual machines) to test things prior to trying them out on client’s systems.

I noticed that a Windows 8.x VM took a long time to shutdown. I thought it was that one VM at first until I found another VM running Windows 7 that had the same issue. I investigated and came up with a solution. Here’s how I fixed the problem.

Edit this file on the computer running the VMWare Workstation:
C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini

Add these lines to the end of the file:

prefvmx.minVmMemPct = “100”
mainMem.useNamedFile = “FALSE”
mainMem.partialLazySave = “FALSE”
mainMem.partialLazyRestore = “FALSE”

Anti-Viruses

Sometimes it`s necessary to point out specific products. This is a great time to address the question of viruses and malware fighting. Get yourself a good physical firewall and make sure your computers are running an anti-virus. Listeners and clients ask me what anti-virus software I use and/or recommend.

If you need a quick check of your systems I`ve compiled a list for you (in no particular order):

  1. Microsoft Safety Scanner (http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner)
  2. Eset Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner)
  3. Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org)

I usually recommend and resell:

  1. AVG (http://www.avg.com) – Note: AVG have a nice management console for Business environments.They now offer a cloud based solution as well.

.

These are the ones that I found worked well. Protection from any or all of these may not protect you from all possible viruses or intrusions. I can`t guarantee the same success that I`ve experienced with them.
