Dell lattitude 3490 LCD screen is black after an update

One of our Lattitude 3490 recently went dark after a Windows 10 update. Luckily we were able to use a remote tool to gain access and determine that the laptop was working. The co-worker didn’t have a spare external screen (or the obvious test) and so we updated the video driver (and BIOS while we were at it) and made sure all the updates were done. We then did a Dell diagnostic test.

In the end, we knew it was the screen that had stopped working. Here’s the kicker, the warranty had literally just expired. I called Dell to see how much a 2 year extension would cost. $480 with taxes. Ouch. So I made some calls and directed the user to a repair show where it cost around $150 to get a new LCD screen put in.

Imagine if it had been on warranty. You’re out traveling, they want to diagnose over the phone, or worst, they want you to send it in. I had someone complain to me the other day Asus took two weeks to replace a broken part on a new laptop a while back.

The moral of this story is that the warranties are generally not worth it.
