  • Goodbye VMware it’s been productive!
First came the rumors. Then the sale of VMware to Broadcom. With it came a giant stick to the ecosystem’s wheel. VMware Essentials was promptly removed from the online store. The perpetual licenses sales were suspended. The manufacturers began sending it notices that vSphere was no longer a SKU for new servers. WTF, right? In early february VMware (by Broadcom) announced the end of the free hypervisor. OMG. A YouTube…

  • My Mac fails to resolve internal DNS at times
When your Mac is configured to use an external DNS server, it will typically try to resolve domain names using that server first before falling back to the internal one. This behavior is normal and is designed to ensure that your Mac can reach external resources on the internet quickly and reliably. If you want to prioritize the internal DNS server over the external one, you can adjust the order…

  • IT trends and near term growth
A few questions were sent to me about the overall market and trends as to bandwidth and capacity. One writer suggested that we had reached “peak connection”. In other words: What more can we possibly want to connect? What…

  • Apple Mac OSx is slow or unstable network when using Windows Server connections
You connect to a Windows Server share and your Mac either won’t find the share, connect to it, or keep losing connection. Welcome to the SMB nightmare that Apple and Microsoft have created. There was a time when it all just worked. Yes, SMB 1.0. The good old days. Then came 2.0 and 3.0. They are more “secure”, but they don’t play well with Macs. Surely this can’t be! Right?

One of our Lattitude 3490 recently went dark after a Windows 10 update. Luckily we were able to use a remote tool to gain access and determine that the laptop was working. The co-worker didn’t have a spare external screen (or the obvious test) and so we updated the video driver (and BIOS while we were at it) and made sure all the updates were done. We then did a…

  • My WordPress site is not working after updating a plugin
So you did the right thing and updated your WordPress site as you were leaving for that well deserved holiday and suddenly everyone sees an error message instead of that great new sports jacket you posted this morning. Usually this is when most of us scratch our heads and try to remember if there was a backup. Fear not, most likely it won’t have to get to that.

  • QuadrigaCX foils our Bitcoin plans
If anyone was paying attention back in 2017, we were victims of the hack at Nicehash. Ironically we started to use QuadrigaCX, reassured with their volume and use of cold wallets. • Server room and server temperatures
Server rooms should be kept dust free and at no more than 20c / 68f. We mentioned server before and still get some interesting questions regarding what makes a great room to house your equipment. • Intel tells companies to stop installing patch for security flaw
We reported a while back about Meltdown and Spectre, the two flaws potentially affected most chips used in computers going back as far as 20 years. We further advised to hold off on the patches and fixes until it became clear as to how taxing they were going to be. As it turns out, a fair number of computers were trashed by the “fix”. The patches “may introduce higher than expected reboots…
  • How to counter the Meltdown and specter security flaws
Unless you have been avoiding all news lately, you have no doubt seen or heard countless reports on two security flaws discovered in Intel, AMD and Arm processors. These, combined, affect pretty much everything built in the last 15 years or so. Without going into all the details, reports appear to indicate that the only real fix is a hardware replacement. The hardware fix isn’t available, so patches and fixes…

  • Crypto Currencies or Gold?
It goes without saying that most people have heard of crypto currencies. Those digital “dollars” based on something called a block chain. Allow me to confess that I didn’t pay much attention to Bitcoin at first. As an IT expert and a writer about the financial markets many are shocked that I didn’t “get it”. I wanted to share with others the “cons” I saw with Bitcoin.
  • Windows 10 Remote Destop Services Port Redirector hangs, is unresponsive
Windows 10 Remote Desktop Services Port Redirector crashes. Hanging or freezing isn’t usually. I imagine this problem goes undetected since so few people turn on the remote desktop service on their Windows 10 computers. In this particular case, the problem was on a Dell Optiplex. It started after an update.
  • Estimating the space requirements for a small server room
Small companies relocate all the time. Many companies appear to get stuck improvising rooms to put the equipment and often end up using a closet. In such cases, poor ventilation ends up causing undo stress of the equipment and bringing some devices to a premature end. I saw one switch that looked like it had partially melted on the bottom. The textured plastic was smooth and discolored.
